Sherman -- The 15th Annual Hispanic Heritage Celebration held Saturday in Sherman served as a prelude to Mexican Independence Day coming up September 16 and also as a forerunner for another Grayson County event featuring Hispanic heritage.  Denison's inaugural Dia de los Muertos Festival & Art Walk is set for November 3.

Sherman's Municipal Lawn was a sea of color Saturday and the savory aroma of authentic Mexican food wafted through the crowd at this popular family-friendly event.

The audience enjoyed an outstanding performance by Aguilas de Mexico Mariachi Band, as well as several solo singers and one duet as entertainers rotated on and off Dewey Mayor Gazebo at Sherman's Municipal Lawn.

Kids enjoyed sampling the fantastic food, a highlight of this event every year. The brave could try their luck at the Toro Loco Show, while the truly fearless signed up for the Jalapeno Eating Contest.

Another important facet of any Hispanic festival is the dancing and Celina Folklorico Dance Group thrilled the crowd with swirling dresses and precise choreography.

Other activities at the 15th Annual Hispanic Heritage Celebration included a Low Rider Car Show, craft vendors, a Queen's Coronation Ball, plus an entire area dedicated to children's games.

Denison's Dia de los Muertos Festival and Art Walk, a celebration of life and the arts, is coming up November 3, from 10:00 a.m. until 8:00 p.m.  The street mercado in downtown Denison's Heritage Park will be a joyous occasion to honor the memory of ancestors and loved ones. Dia de los Muertos Festival and Art Walk features free parking and free activities all day! For more information, email arts@denisontexas.us

Steve Black and friends invite the Hispanic Heritage Celebration crowd to participate in Denison's Dia de los Muertos Festival and Art Walk.
