A precision passing attack and a big stop on defense in overtime carried the Sherman Bearcats to a 57-56 overtime victory over the Little Elm Lobos in a classic high-octane showdown to kick off the 2012 season.

Together, these teams racked up over 1,100 yards of offense, but in very different ways. The Lobos amassed 512 yards rushing, however that was overshadowed by the six touchdown strikes thrown by Sherman's Dru Smith, with Joseph Harvey snagging three TD tosses. In a season opener to remember, Smith went 18-for-26 for 405 yards, with six touchdowns and no interceptions.

Sherman led 14-7 after the first quarter and 21-14 at the half.  Little Elm outscored Sherman 14-7 in the third period to leave the teams all knotted up at 28-28 going into the fourth quarter.

With tension mounting, both teams put 22 points on the board in the final period to make the score 50-50 at the end of regulation play.

In overtime, Smith's sixth TD pass of the night and a PAT  gave Sherman a 57-50 lead.  Little Elm scored on a short run to make the score 57-56. The Lobos elected to run for two points, which would have won the game, but the Bearcats' defense rose to the occasion and stopped the ball carrier short of the goal line, preserving a wild one-point win, 57-56.
