Bonham -- In order to take a proactive approach to protecting residents from the danger of West Nile Virus, the City of Bonham will begin spraying for mosquitoes.

"As soon as forces are mobilized," stated Bonham Mayor Roy Floyd when asked about the timeframe for spraying.

Mayor Floyd said Bonham City Manager Bill Shipp met with each Bonham City Council member to assess the level of concern regarding West Nile Virus. Shipp then made an executive decision to implement a spraying program.

According to Center for Disease Control, West Nile Virus, a potentially dangerous disease, is most often spread by the bite of an infected mosquito.

While approximately 80 percent of people (about 4 out of 5) who are infected with WNV will not show any symptoms at all, up to 20 percent of the people who become infected have symptoms such as fever, headache, and body aches, nausea, vomiting, and sometimes swollen lymph glands or a skin rash on the chest, stomach and back. Symptoms can last for as short as a few days, though even healthy people have become sick for several weeks.
