Sandy Barber, Executive Director of the Fannin County Children’s Center, gave the program at the Bonham Rotary Club on Wednesday, August 15. First she talked about upcoming activities at the Children’s Center. The center is currently accepting donations for their 16th annual School Supply Drive. Last year they gave supplies to 726 students. Distribution days will be August 22, 23 and 24 from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon and 2:00 to 5:00 p.m. at the Center at 112 W. 5th in Bonham.

The Center also has several child abuse prevention classes scheduled in the coming months. They will be training all of the teachers in Bonham, Ladonia and Leonard in the coming weeks. In September, they will offer several free classes that are open to the public.

Their “Justice Is Served” fundraiser will be November 10 and once again include dinner and auction to raise funds for all of the center’s programs. This event raises about 10% of the center’s annual operating budget. Barber reported that it was 20 years ago this month that Paula Spindle first contacted Texas CASA for information about starting a CASA program in Fannin County.

In April 2013, the center will celebrate 20 years of serving children. For more information, go to www.fanninccc.org or call (903) 583-4339.

Barber also talked about Great Days of Service. This year’s event will be on October 20 and will once again include community clean-up, home improvement projects, food drive and nursing home visitations. Last year more than 250 volunteers participated and there were 20 participating organizations, including churches, schools, businesses, non-profits and other organizations. Barber said they are currently seeking partner organizations for this year. The next planning meeting will be Sept 6 at 6:00 pm at the Children’s Center at 112 W. 5th in Bonham. At the same meeting, the Rotary Club had two guests. They were David Dean, Scout Executive for NeTseO Trails Council from Paris, Texas. Also attending was Rotarian Clay Riales from Norfolk, Virginia.
