Dallas County affiliate of Susan G. Komen® announces results of 2011-2012 grant cycle

DALLAS –  – The Dallas County Affiliate of Susan G. Komen® has announced the outcomes of its 2011-2012 grant cycle, which provided more than $1.9 million in funding for Dallas County breast health services through 11 community grants.

Grants were awarded to support programs offering free or low-cost breast cancer education, diagnostic services, treatment and support services for uninsured and underinsured Dallas County residents.

Information collected from Susan G. Komen® Dallas County’s 2011-2012 grant recipients yielded the following results:

• 5,810 women received screening mammograms

• 726 women received diagnostic services such as breast MRIs, diagnostic mammograms and biopsies

• 1,340 women received help with case management/patient navigation

• 259 women received transportation assistance to and from medical appointments

• 784 women received various forms of treatment assistance including financial support, medical care, transportation and support projects

• 283  breast cancer patients were provided with breast prostheses or bras

• 228 breast cancer patients were provided with wigs, scarves and other head coverings

• 172 women received high risk assessment services

• 92 women received clinical breast exams

• 35 women received genetic screening for hereditary breast cancer

 In addition to the above-mentioned services, Komen Dallas County grantees attended 818 educational events and distributed 16,030 written materials to empower Dallas County women with information about the importance of early detection and taking an active role in their own breast health.

Komen Dallas County’s 2011-2012 grantees included: American Cancer Society, Methodist Richardson – Asian Breast Health Outreach Project, Bridge of Blessings, The Bridge Breast Network, Methodist Health System, Parkland Health & Hospital System, Planned Parenthood of North Texas, Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital of Dallas, UT Southwestern Medical Center of Dallas/Center for Breast Care – Mammography Unit and Genetic Screening, and YWCA of Metropolitan Dallas.

Seventy-five percent of the net funds raised by Komen Dallas County remain within the community to support these life-saving services for residents who otherwise could not afford them. The remaining 25 percent supports national research to find the cures.
Komen Dallas County announced the recipients of its 2012-2013 grant cycle in April, funding a recording-breaking $2 million in community grants.
