Quilts from the Sam Bell Maxey House on display at the Sam Rayburn House Museum

The Sam Rayburn House Museum will take part in the 2012 Bonham Quilt Hop. The event, which celebrates historic and contemporary quilts and quilting traditions, is in its third year as a city-wide festivity. The Quilt Hop will be held on Saturday, July 28 from 9:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. The event is free.

This year the Sam Rayburn House Museum will display quilts from the historic collection of the Sam Bell Maxey House State Historic Site.The Maxey house, administered by the Texas Historical Commission is located in Paris, Texas.The elegant Victorian-era1868 Italianate home is the former residence of Sam Bell Maxey, Confederate general and Texas Senator. Maxey relatives lived in the home for an astounding 99 consecutive years, until 1967 when it was donated to the city of Paris.The quilts from the Maxey collection will be displayed on the Rayburn House Museum beds along with Rayburn collection quilts. Rayburn House staff will give tours of the home focused on the quilt collections. Staff from the Sam Bell Maxey House will give a presentation about their quilt collection at 10:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. The museum will also provide hands-on educational activities for children. 

Other sites participating in the event include the Bonham Public Library, Bonham Visitor Center, Creative Arts Center, Fannin County Historical Commission, Fannin County Museum of History and the Sam Rayburn Museum. Various activities and quilt displays include quilt appraisals, demonstrations and presentations, and displays of historic and modern quilts. Those who visit all the sites during the event can enter a drawing for quilt-themed prizes.
