Grayson College, 6101 Grayson Dr. on Hwy 691, Denison, Texas

The workshops will include a PowerPoint introduction to building large paper-mache marionettes and giant puppets. The session will also include hands-on construction of a marionette or giant puppet. The sessions are free but participants must provide the material for their marionette or giant puppet.

Marionette material needed for the workshop includes a mat knife, newspapers, rolls of masking tape, minimum of 2 (2) 1” X 2” X 8’ furring strips, seventeen (18) #10 screw eye hooks, eight (9) split rings, and recycled cardboard (boxes that have been cut down into sheets are easier to transport). To complete your marionette you will need brown butcher paper (packaging paper or painters brown paper or paper sacks) and wheat paste. (Recipe is below.)

Giant puppet material needed for the workshop includes a mat knife, newspapers, rolls of masking tape, Four (4) 1” X 2” X 8’ furring strips, eight (8) #10 screw eye hooks, four (4) split rings, recycled cardboard (boxes that have been cut down into sheets are easier to transport), brown butcher paper (packaging paper or painters brown paper or paper sacks), and wheat paste.

Basic Wheat Paste Recipe

· Begin by heating 1 cup of water on the stove top in a medium-sized saucepan pan. The pan needs to be large enough to allow you to stir the ingredients without splashing.

· Measure 3 tbsp. of wheat flour into the measuring cup. Add just enough cold water to the flour to make a thin paste, whisking out all of the lumps.

· Pour the cold flour mixture slowly into the pan of hot water, stirring constantly. Bring it to a boil, continuing to stir until it thickens. Add 1 tbsp. of sugar to make a stronger paste.

· Remove your wheat paste from the heat and allow it to cool completely.

· Store your paste in a container.

Please note I generally make a batch with 4 cups of water, 12 tbsp. of wheat flour, and 4 tbsp. sugar. I will cover the pan with aluminum foil or a large plastic container and store in the refrigerator until it is ready to use.

The goal of the workshops is to create marionettes and giant puppets for parades and other events in Denison and surrounding communities.
