By the age of 10, John Conlee sang and played guitar on his family’s tobacco farm in Versailles, Kentucky. Before moving to Nashville in 1971, Conlee worked as a tenor in a barbershop quartet, licensed mortician and disc jockey at WLAC radio station. ABC Records signed Conlee to their record label in 1976.
Conlee’s first album, Rose Colored Glasses, produced his first three hit singles “Rose Colored Glasses,” charted at #5 on the Billboard Hot Country Singles charts, “Lady Lay Down” and “Backside of Thirty,” both reaching #1 on the Billboard country charts. Conlee’s next three albums, Forever (1979), Friday Night Blues (1980) and With Love (1981), produced another string of Top 10 hits, including “Before My Time,” “Baby You’re Something,” “Friday Night Blues,” “She Can’t Say That Anymore,” and “Miss Emily’s Picture.”
In 1983, Conlee returned to the Top 10 charts with “Common Man,” as well as “Busted” and “I Don’t Remember Loving You,” from the 1982 album Busted. That same year, Conlee produced another string of hits reaching #3, including “I’m Only In It for the Love,” “In My Eyes” and “As Long as I’m Rockin’ with You.” In 1986, Conlee moved to Columbia Records and released two hit albums, Harmony and American Faces, which produced his last #1 hit, “Got My Heart Set on You” (1986) and his last Top 10 hit, “Domestic Life.”
Conlee’s latest album Fellow Travelers, from 16th Avenue Records, spawned two hit singles, including the national Ford Truck promotion hit single “Hit the Ground Runnin.” Conlee has accomplished a great deal of success in country music with 26 of his 29 singles that charted in the Top 20 or better, including eight #1’s. Since 1981, Conlee has been a member of the distinguished Grand Ole Opry.
