SE baseball falls in 1-0 in series finale at UAM

MONTICELLO, Ark. - Southeastern's James Taylor took a no-hitter into the seventh inning, but Southeastern could not find the timely hits to take advantage, falling 1-0 in the series finale at Arkansas-Monticello on Sunday afternoon in Monticello, Ark.

The loss drops the Savage Storm to 29-12 overall and 13-5 in Great American Conference play.

SE maintains its place in the top spot of the GAC standings with a one-game lead over Southern Arkansas which went 2-1 in its series against Henderson State.

The Storm will be back in action int he final home series of the season when it hosts Harding April 21-22 at The Ballpark in Durant.

Taylor tossed 7.0 innings and allowed just the one run on two hits while striking out 10. The contest marked personal bests for longest outing and most strikeouts. He was hit with his first loss of the season and slips to 3-1.

Cameron Mann tossed the final inning and struck out one and allowed a hit.

The Storm, however, stranded seven runners on the afternoon, including five in scoring position.

SE nearly tied the game in the top of the ninth inning as Brad Shankle connected on a single and was followed by a Kevin Phillips walk. Two batters later Spencer Barnett would bloop a ball into right field, but Shankle would be thrown out at the plate trying to tie the game for the final out of the contest.

Peter Bako led the way with a game-high two hits, including his first triple of the season, while Shankle, Phillips, Barnett and Chad Colbert each added hits.

Bako tripled with two outs in the first but was stranded at third.

SE would load the bases in the third only to end the inning with a double play.

Phillips would reach second after singling and stealing in the fourth and Bako would single, and steal in the sixth before being picked off at second.

UAM put runners on in the third and fifth inning on hit batsmen, but none advanced past first.

The Boll Weevils would open the seventh with a walk before following with a single that snapped the no hitter. A sac fly by the five-hole hitter would score the game's only run.
