Bonham -- The biggest crowd to watch a basketball game at Bonham High School in recent memory packed Leonard A. Gerner Gymnasium Monday night to watch the Fannin County Habitat Hammerheads get dazzled by the high-flying antics of the Harlem Ambassadors.
Along with the jams and jokes, this fundraiser will help Fannin County Habitat for Humanity jumpstart its fifth affordable, energy-efficient home in partnership with a local family.
John Sisk elevates for a lay-up to keep the Hammerheads in the contest early.
The Ambassadors opened up in a man-to-man defense -- although the announcer chose to use the politically correct term of person-to-person defense in deference to the young ladies participating -- until back-to-back buckets by John Sisk forced the Ambassadors to go into a Cotton-Eyed Joe. It was that kind of a night.
Not to be outdone, the Hammerheads responded with a box-and-two defense, which proved fairly effective until someone pointed out that particular defense would require a minimum of six people, which is typically frowned on in basketball.
But there were no frowns this night; just a lot of basketball and a lot of good-natured fun, with a little music thrown in for good measure.
To date, Fannin County Habitat for Humanity, working side-by-side with local families, has constructed homes in Bonham, Nunnalee Community, Honey Grove and Leonard. This entertaining evening may very well help another family realize the home of their dreams.
