If you advance confidently in the direction of your dreams and endeavor to live the life which you have imagined, you will meet with a success unexpected in common hours. -- Henry David Thoreau

Sherman -- Lacy and Dorothy Harber knew for years that they would open a wildlife exhibit someday.

"Someday is here," Dorothy Harber announced to the crowd Saturday, December 10, 2011 minutes before the ribbon cutting for the Harber Wildlife Museum.

Turning to her husband, Lacy, seated on the podium behind her, Mrs. Harber said, "Thank you for taking me on all those journeys and thank you for all the memories. Now we can share those memories."

In his typically modest fashion, Mr. Harber deflected all credit to those around him.

"All I did was sign a couple of checks," he said with a shrug and the hint of a smile, but this regionally important and culturally significant exhibit is actually the realization of a 25-year dream of the Harbers and the product of more than 100 expeditions around the globe.

In addition to a variety of business interests and extensive real estate holdings, Lacy Harber privately owns American Bank of Texas, which has 16 branches and more than $1.1 billion in assets.

Denison Chamber of Commerce President Anna McKinney welcomed the audience.

"This is something we should all be extremely proud of," noted Ms. McKinney.

Sherman Mayor Bill Magers thanked the Harbers for a "seven-figure investment in a part of our city that welcomes it."

Mayor Magers presented Lacy and Dorothy Harber with a key to the City of Sherman before the ribbon cutting.

The Harber Wildlife Museum will have an official grand opening ceremony in January 2012, however the Harbers wanted families in town for the holidays to be able to enjoy the exhibit.

Harber Wildlife Museum is located at 4703 Texoma Parkway in Sherman.
