Jean Shoemaker Smith passed away November 6, 2011 at her home at Presbyterian Village North in Dallas, Texas. She was born November 5, 1917 in Columbus, Ohio to parents Herbert Ellsworth and Elizabeth Wheaton Shoemaker.
Jean Shoemaker grew up in Columbus, and graduated from Ohio State University with a Bachelor’s degree in Fine Arts. On October 29, 1942, she married Herbert Dean Smith in Columbus.
The Smiths lived in Harrisburg, PA, where son Michael Dean was born; then Amarillo and Sulphur Springs, TX before locating in Bonham in 1950.
Jean Smith was an adult leader in both Cub Scouts and Camp Fire Girls, and in her church, First United Methodist Church (Bonham) where she was Sunday School Superintendent-Youth Division, and a member of the Chancel Choir. She was a member of the Current Literature Club and of the Board of Directors of the Bonham Public Library. She loved watercolor painting and was a member of various regional arts groups.
Mrs. Smith was preceded in death by her parents and sister, Marion Shoemaker Ewing. She is survived by her husband, H. Dean Smith at Presbyterian Village North; her son Michael D. Smith and wife Susan of Bonham; grandson Court D. Smith and his wife Jennifer of Frisco; granddaughter Carrie F. Smith Scotti and husband Anthony of Dallas; and great grandson Connor Smith and great granddaughter Ainsley Smith of Frisco.
She will be remembered for her love of life, compassion, her art, and her love of butterflies. Memorials may be made to the Creative Arts Center (200 W 5th St., Bonham, TX 75418) or the place of your choice. A memorial exhibit of her art will take place in the spring at the Creative Arts Center.
