Rating, celebrity chef add to draw of McKinney’s historic downtown square

McKinney, TX – Rick’s Chophouse in historic downtown McKinney was given a Four-Star rating this week by the Dallas Morning News.

In the review of Rick’s that appeared in the Dallas Morning News on Thursday, Feb. 18, food critic Leslie Brenner writes, “If I lived in McKinney and had my druthers, I'd probably dine at Rick's Chophouse once a week. Meanwhile, next time I have friends or relatives in town and I want to show them just how wonderful Texas cooking and hospitality can be, McKinney is where we'll head.”

Owners Don Day and Rick Wells opened Rick’s Chophouse in the old McKinney Opera House building (107 N. Kentucky) in the summer of 2007 along with the 14-room Grand Hotel and Ballroom.  In the, spring of 2009, Wells and Day brought in up-and-coming Executive Chef Paul Petersen to head the staff of Rick’s and the newly opened Sauce on the Square. It is Chef Petersen’s expertise in the kitchen and the food he creates were the focus of the review. The review also discusses Chef Petersen’s recent participation on the TLC television program “BBQ Pitmasters.”

“Best of all is the food … it's a trait of Petersen's cooking in general: He knows where the flavor boundaries are and pushes just to the limit,” critic Brenner writes. “The service is exemplary, from the welcome at the door to an offer of a tour of the hotel on a quiet weeknight.”

“There are only a handful of four-star restaurants in the DFW Metroplex, so this is big news for us, news that’ll bring another group of visitors to downtown McKinney,” said Rick’s co-owner Day of the prestigious rating. “Rick and Chef Paul are to be congratulated for their hard work.”
