Trenton -- It was no easy road that led to the 2009 Trenton Holiday Tournament championship, but when the dust cleared it was the Dodd City Hornets driving away with the title trophy. Dodd City put away a tall Valley View team in the opening round and edged Ector, 54-51, in the semifinals to advance to the championship game where the hometown Trenton Tigers were waiting.
Dodd City and Trenton were neck-and-neck through the first quarter, but all that changed in the second period when Nathan Roberts took over the game by pouring in 15 points to give the Hornets a 37-28 lead at halftime.
Trenton's Tray Tidwell put back an offensive rebound to start the second half to make the score 37-30, but Dodd City's Landon Darwin drained a three-point shot and the Hornets went back to work. By the end of the third period, Dodd City had a 47-34 advantage.
The Hornets led by as much as 21 points down the stretch before posting a 66-47 victory.
Dodd City's Nathan Roberts had a game-high 29 points and Landon Darwin joined him in double figures with 10 points. Patrick Moore and Steven Cockrill each scored six, Shihei Williams and Dillon Stewart both finished with four points, Seth Stephens put up three points, with Jaylen Wallace and Ethan Taylor each chipping in two points.
Dodd City's Patrick Moore was selected as the tournament MVP.
