Four Grayson County College theater students were recognized during the American College Theater Festival (ACTF) state competition Oct. 15-16 at Midwestern State University in Wichita Falls. Sponsored by the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C., the event attracted theater departments from community colleges and four-year institutions across Texas.
Kalvin Douglas of Denison, Trina Leonard of Bells and Luis Perez of Sherman earned Irene Ryan Nomination awards for acting. Each will prepare a monologue and two scenes with a partner for regional competition. Chris Hendrik of Sadler-Southmayd received a citation for Excellence in Sound Design. He is eligible for regional competition as well. In addition, the GCC Theater Department received Excellence awards in Costume Design, Lighting Design, Prop Design and Scene Design.
The students were part of the cast and crew of the comedy, The Iliad, The Odyssey and All Greek Mythology in 99 Minutes or Less, which they presented at the festival. According to Robin Robinson, GCC theater director, ACTF provides many opportunities for GCC students. Through it, they get the chance to “tour” a show and experience the process of taking a full-scale production on the road. Theater majors also attend workshops led by seasoned theater professionals.
“The awards are significant because these students have been recognized for excellence in their craft, but the exposure is good for everyone,” Robinson said. “Through ACTF, GCC theater students can network with professionals and other colleges, and gain attention to earn scholarships to four-year schools.”
The GCC students will compete at the ACTF regional competition Feb. 23-27 at Amarillo College in Amarillo. Regional winners will advance to national competition at the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C., in April.
