This rainy weather makes me want to stay home and read a good book – or several. I took a poll of the staff at the Van Alstyne Library to see what everyone is reading. Judy Spence, young adult and college librarian, is reading The Graveyard Book by Neil Gaiman, the winner of the ALA Best Books For YA and also the Newberry Award. I’m one of those persons who seem to have a different book in every room. I’ve just finished Faye Kellerman’s book Jupiter’s Bones on my Kindle, and Half Broke Horses by Jeanette Walls . On my lunch hour, I’m reading The Lovely Bones by Alice Sebold, and Oprah’s current pick, Say You’re One of Them by Uwen Akpan. In the car I’m listening to a CD, The Memory Keepers Daughter by Kim Edwards. Like me, Lillie Monk, our cataloger and local history specialist, is reading more than one book. She just finished Heat Lightening by John Sandford and is starting Vince Flynn’s Term Limits. Mary Emdy, our book processor, is reading the Bourne Identity by Robert Ludlum, and Robin Cook’s Fatal Cure. I let children’s assistant DeAnna Willman get out the door without telling me what she is currently reading. It’s a mystery: is it a book for children or for adults? What books are you reading during this rainy weather?
The Bluebonnet Book Club, a book discussion club for children 3rd to 5th grade, is reading Beverly Cleary’s book Ramona and Her Father this week. Join us on Monday afternoons at 4:00 p.m. to participate.
From the Desk of DeAnna Willman: Last week in story time we enjoyed the colors of fall while having fun with leaves! The kids made their own quilts to go with the letter Q. Each one was very different and special. We also enjoyed several books about trees ad their leaves. We even talked about the difference between evergreens and deciduous (the ones that loose their leaves) trees. Then we created our own suncatchers with various leaves that had been collected in the area. I hope that you will join us next week for Pre-School Story Time, on Wednesday, at 10:15 in the morning.
Remember our Pajama Story Time on November 5th, at 7:00 p.m. We will be listening to Debbie Reece read her book, The Christmas Pumpkin. Afterward, we will get to meet Mrs. Reece and participate in some more pumpkin activities and food.
From the Desk of Lillie Monk, Local History Assistant: We have many unidentified pictures in our history file. From time to time we will print a few in the paper. If you can identify anyone in the photo, please call the library at 903-482-5991.

Today’s photo shows two ladies and a child posing in front of a house, with a gentleman seated in a buggy. There is no identification on the photo, and no date.
From the Desk of Judy Spence: Reminder to teens 13 years of age and up to get ready for a seriously wicked good time at Teen Council’s upcoming Wicked Waltz. Face painting contest, Limbo contest, costumr contest, and more are all scheduled for Halloween Night at the Van Alstyne Community Center from 6-10 p.m. Admission is $2.00 with costume and $3.00 without costume. See you there!
