The Canterbury Episcopal School held its first of three summer sports camps June 22-25.  The volleyball camp, for girls entering grades 3-12, offered a chance for new players to learn the basics of the game and allowed experienced players to improve their skills.  Athletic director Scott Vaughan, along with coaches Kim Shelton and Jeff Ellis, led the camp, which was divided into a morning session for students entering grades 3-8 and an afternoon session for the high school girls.  Girls from the Canterbury Volleyball Team helped out in the morning session as the campers split into small groups to perform various drills.

Coach Vaughan and his staff provide a fun environment for the campers, beginning the camp session with a listening game called “The Captain’s Game.”  Similar to the more familiar “Simon Says,” this game gets the girls warmed up as they respond to different commands from the captain.  From there, campers were divided into smaller groups to work on skills, with a friendly competition as the various groups tried to outscore each other in the various contests.

Scrimmages were held to give the campers the full experience of learning volleyball fundamentals such as rotating on and off the court.  Each session ended with a summary of what was learned during the session and recognition of campers for their achievements.

A basketball camp will be held for boys and girls age 6-16 on July 13-16th  on the Canterbury campus.  As with the volleyball camp, the Canterbury high school players will be helping with the activities.  The Cougars have won two state championships and in the last four years, they have made three appearances in the final four.  The coaching staff includes three coaches that have coached at the collegiate level, and one of the coaches is a current “advance scout” for the NBA.  In addition to the basketball camp, a baseball camp is scheduled for boys age 8-18 on July 20-23.  Complete details and enrollment forms for each of these camps can be found on the school’s website, www.thecanterburyschool.org.

The Canterbury Episcopal School is an independent, college-prep school for grades K-12 in DeSoto, which boasts award winning athletic, academic, and fine arts programs.  Canterbury is currently accepting applications for enrollment for the 2009-2010 school-year.  The school is open for tours each Tuesday and Thursday from 9:30-10:30.
