Close to 70 people gathered in the library this past Thursday to enjoy the Awards Ceremony for Teen Council’s 6th Annual Art Contest. We had another fantastic turnout with 60 entries from Middle School and High School collectively. The talent of our community’s youth had even our most seasoned judges amazed.
This year Teen Council was able to award a runner up prize in addition to the Best in Show, but I can’t help but wonder if, next year, we might add another placement. So many contestants were deserving and we would love to be able to recognize and award them all.
The award for Best in Show, Middle School went to Tyler Kennedy of Anna and the award for runner up, Middle School went to Gilberto Escamilla, also of Anna. Both pieces were exceptional for their use of color and eye to detail. In the High School division, the award for Best in Show went to Miss Min Chen of Anna and the award for runner up went to Miss Christian McGowan of Denison. This class was, to me, the most difficult and I did not envy our judges their difficult decision.
Teen Council and the Van Alstyne Public Library would like to thank Mrs. Sandy Barrett and Mrs. Jackie Patton, art teachers for Anna Middle School and High School for their exceptional participation. Thank you also to Mrs. Elizabeth Bennett of Howe for the several entries her students brought. Mrs. Bennett has been a participant in our contest since the very beginning. Van Alstyne Middle School and High School had a respectable turnout but we hope to see more from the home team in the future.
We can only hope that our heartfelt thanks and our small gifts of appreciation are enough to keep our wonderful judges coming back in the future. Mrs. Nancy Hall of Van Alstyne, Mr. Steve Black from Grayson County College, and Mr. David Ablett of Van Alstyne handled our large crowd with ease and did a wonderful job making some difficult judging decisions. We can’t thank them enough for their time and expertise.
From the Desk of Children’s Assistant Barbara Washington: Here is our schedule for May: May 5 and 6, Cinco de Mayo with Blanca Scoggins (bilingual story time for everyone!); May 12 and 13, When the Rooster Crowed (stick puppet show); May 19 and 20, Chicka Chicka Boom Boom; and May 26 and 27, Over in the Meadow. Summer activities Kick-Off will be Thursday June 11 at 2:00.
