McKinney, Texas —Studio ArtHouse McKinney is presenting an en plein air painting workshop for adults in Katie’s Garden at the Heard-Craig Center for the Arts at 205 West Hunt Street on Saturday, May 9.

Artist and educator Tom Anderson will guide attendees as they start and finish a complete oil painting in just three hours, while learning special plein air techniques.

The workshop, offered at two times: 12:00pm-3:00 and 4:00-7:00pm, is suitable for beginner to intermediate artists and costs $80, including all supplies.

Participants will learn to do as the Impressionists did, working with an array of brilliant colors inspired by the blooming spring flowers and the constantly changing light. The public is invited to bring lawn chairs and observe as the workshops unfold.

This event coincides with McKinney Downtown’s Second Saturday, so after the paintings are complete artists and guests are encouraged to stroll a block to the square and enjoy music and art at the Downtown restaurants and art galleries.

En plein air is a French expression which means "in the open air," and is particularly used to describe the act of painting outdoors. There is an impressionist tradition in Texas begun by native Texan Julian Onderdonk (1882–1922); a student of William Merritt Chase who painted breathtaking images of the hill country and is often referred to as ¯The Father of Texas painting.
