As I sat watching the movie “Twilight” with 27 teens this past Friday evening, I realized that I was witnessing the repeat of a phenomenon I had previously associated only with the “Lord of the Rings” movies. In “Lord of the Rings” teen heart throb Orlando Bloom portrays Legolas, the tall, willowy, and slightly elitist elf.
Elves are, by nature, an extremely talented and cultured race. Which, evidently, is not accepted as gracefully by teen males as one might hope. The constant giggling, blushing, and repeated sighing by teen females does little to engender affection. Perhaps I should have seen it coming.

I had dismissed most of the Twilight marketing gimmicks as just that: a gimmick. However, when I found that there was actually an “Edwards Body Shimmer” available to replicate the austere glitter of vampiric skin, I should have realized that things were getting out of hand.
Back to our movie.
The story begins to unfold and our troupe of vampires makes its on screen appearance, including Edward. The young ladies in the room release a collective gasp/giggle/sigh while the young men in the room start in with the jokes. Which continues unabated for the remaining hour and a half. As an older female I was torn between laughing at some of the really funny jabs our young men were making at darling Eddie and siding with the young ladies because… well, Edward is Edward, after all!

We all had a great time playing “Twilight Jeopardy” and our contest for best-dressed Twilight character went to a very convincing “Bella Swan.”
