TRENTON - The Jacob Cangemi Memorial Scholarship would like to announce the second annual Jacob’s Run which includes a Competitive 5K Run or 5K Walk for Fun. The event will be held May 16, 2009 starting and finishing in the downtown square of Trenton, Texas.

“Last year’s event was a huge success," said race director and co-founder, Renee Cangemi. "There were 40 sponsors at four different levels and many donations. There were 53 Runners and 78 Walkers for a total of 131 participants. Over $9,000 was raised to support this very worthy cause.  We’ve already had several sponsors sign up for the 2009 event but continue to look for more to help underwrite certain aspects of the event such as t-shirts, water stops and other refreshments, awards, publicity, etc. We have four sponsorship levels available,” said Cangemi.

Yvette Oquin, co-founder of the scholarship says, “The purpose of this annual event is to raise money for the scholarship which will help provide college scholarships to Trenton area high school students in need of financial assistance whose academic and personal potential may be unfulfilled due to circumstances beyond their control. It is our hope to show that we value the critical role that education plays in changing the lives of young men and women. We support mid-level high school students from difficult backgrounds who through no fault of their own do not have the support they need to access higher education. Because of the success of last year’s event, we presented our first progressive scholarship to John Melton, 2008 Trenton High School graduate.”

The Jacob Cangemi Memorial Scholarship was founded in 2007 by Jacob’s mother Renee Cangemi, her sister Yvette Oquin and Laurice Goodwin, Jacob’s former teacher and mentor, to honor his memory.

Jacob passed away on 07/07/07 due to injuries sustained from a car wreck. In the 18 years that Jacob lived he left an everlasting memory with all that he touched. He was a devoted son and brother, a loyal friend and hard worker. Jacob was a natural born leader and encourager with a heart for people who were struggling. He consistently overcame adversity in his life and was an inspiration to those he touched. It is in this spirit that the Jacob Cangemi Memorial Scholarship was created.
