A nine year survivor of pancreatic cancer, Pattie June Moody Carter died January 6, 2009, at her home in McKinney.  She and her husband of 55 years Charles Ballard Carter spent half their married life in Bonham, Texas, where they reared their two children, Cathie Carter Walsh of Plano and Charles Ballard Carter, Jr. of Memphis, Tennessee.

In addition to her children, Pattie is survived by her daughter-in-law Carla Gilliland Carter of Memphis, five grandchildren Katie Walsh, Abby Walsh, Toney Walsh III, Blair Carter, and Will Carter, and two brothers Kenneth Moody (and his wife Dolores) and Steve Moody of Longview.

Pattie was born June 2, 1931, in Texarkana, Texas, to Annie Gwendolyn Liles Moody and Thomas Tant Moody.  She graduated from Texas High School in Texarkana in 1949 and followed Charles to Lambuth University in Jackson, Tennessee, where she was a cheerleader and the homecoming queen.  She and Charles were married on June 14, 1953, at Williams Memorial Methodist Church in Texarkana.

Following her service as president of the Texarkana Jayceettes, Pattie went on to become the first woman to serve on the Bonham Chamber of Commerce board.  She and Charles enjoyed several years of raising thoroughbred horses at their farm in Justin where she was a lifetime member of  the Texas Thoroughbred Breeders’ Association.  At the time of her death, Pattie was a member of St. Andrew United Methodist Church in Plano.

Her family and friends remember with a smile her exuberance for life, her love of her family, and the many great times they spent with her through the years.  Her great tenacity and indomitable spirit coupled with thousands of prayers and excellent medical care she received allowed her to beat the deadliest form of cancer for so many years.  Her family considers that great determination and spirit her greatest legacy.

Services will be held Saturday, January 10, at noon at the Chapelwood Funeral Home at 927 S. Kings Highway, Texarkana, Texas.  In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorials be made to Lambuth University (Development Office, 705 Lambuth Blvd. Jackson, Tennessee 38301) where Pattie and Charles spent so many happy hours.
