When the third period ended in the 2008 Trenton Holiday Tournament girls championship game between the Bells Lady Panthers and the S&S Lady Rams, Bells found themselves trailing an experienced and athletic S&S squad, 37-28.  That meant the Lady Panthers would have to outscore their opponent by 10 points to leave town with the big trophy.

And that's exactly what they did.

Fans on both sides of the gym were on the edge of their seat as the Bells girls rallied to slip by S&S 41-40 to win the girls bracket of the tournament.

Bells junior forward Hannah Scoggins scored six points in the opening period to keep her Lady Panthers in the hunt and then fittingly enough it was Scoggins crashing the boards for a basket in the closing seconds that gave Bells an exciting 41-40 victory.  For her effort, Scoggins was rewarded with the 2008 Trenton Holiday Tournament MVP trophy.

The Lady Panthers grabbed a 4-0 lead to start the contest, thanks to an inside basket by Ashley Demko and an offensive rebound and put back by Shelby Renner.  Scoggins came up with a steal on the defensive end of the court and make it count by connecting for her first basket at the other end of the gym.  S&S got on the board with a free throw each by Rami Burleson and Shelby Vinson, but Bells stretched their early advantage to 9-2 when Renner worked a pass inside to Scoggins, who managed to hit the hoop and the harm.

S&S scored when Shelbi Tollison came down with an offensive rebound and went back up for two points.  Scoggins knocked down an outside jumper to give the Lady Panthers an 11-4 advantage.  Then S&S seemed to catch fire.  Burleson got a runner to roll in.  Cortnie Webb picked the Lady Panthers' pocket for a steal and took it coast-to-coast.  Rachel Curry raced past her defender on a dribble and banked in a bucket to trim the Bells' lead to 11-10 going into the second period.

These two competitive teams traded points until the first half ended.  Webb drained a three-point shot but the final points in the frame came when Bells senior Hillary Monk powered up inside for a basket that sent the teams to the locker rooms at halftime with the score all knotted up at 19-19.

The momentum swung in favor of S&S in the third period, as the Lady Rams poured in 18 points and seemed to take control of the contest.  S&S was on top, 37-28, going into the fourth quarter.

Scoggins dropped in two points.  The Lady Panthers clamped down on defense and Bells looked inside to Scoggins on the offensive end for another bucket that cut the S&S lead down to 38-32.  S&S collected one free throw, but Scoggins connected again to make the score, 38-34.  Then all the Lady Panthers seemed to make key plays down the stretch.  Lauren Moore nailed a basket to make it a two-point game.  Monk dropped in two points to tie the game, 38-38, and then a free throw by Monk put Bells in front, 39-38.  Quick hands by Monk knocked the ball away from a Lady Ram and Moore pounced on it and wisely called for a time out.  S&S kept battling, though, and the Lady Rams got the ball back.  Kenzie Daniels calmly sank two free throws that gave her Lady Rams a 40-39 lead with 28 seconds showing on the clock.

A shot by Bells ricocheted out, but Scoggins came flying in from the right side to grab the rebound and hit the game-winning hoop.

With Bells up 41-40, S&S started down the court.  Bells' Jocelyn came up with a timely steal and time expired, giving the Lady Panthers a wild, one-point win.

Bells' Hannah Scoggins scored a game-high 17 points, Hilary Monk knocked down nine points, Ashley Demko scored seven, with Lauren Moore, Jocelyn Moore, Shelby Renner and Rylie Ruth each contributing two points apiece.

Kenzie Daniels led S&S with 13 points, Katie Murphy canned nine points, Cortnie Webb added eight points, Rami Burleson finished with four points and Shelby Vinson chipped in three points.
