TREC to honor grant recipients who were awarded $880,000
Dallas, Texas, December 16, 2008 –The Real Estate Council’s 2009 Community Breakfast will feature one of Texas’ prominent business leaders and philanthropists, Forrest Hoglund, whose topic is “Perfect Balance:
Business and Social Responsibility.” The breakfast is Thursday, January 15, 2009, at the Westin Galleria Hotel, 13340 Dallas Parkway, Dallas, Texas 75240. Check-in is at 7:30 a.m., and the breakfast is from 8:00-9:00 a.m.
Michelle Corson, TREC president, said, “Forrest Hoglund shares TREC’s belief that those who have succeeded in business should use the fruits of their success to improve the community. In addition to addressing the balance of work and community, the breakfast celebrates the nearly $1 million in grants given by TREC this year, which would not have been possible without the collaboration of our Community Partners.”

Forrest Hoglund is Chairman and President of the Hoglund Foundation. Sally and Forrest Hoglund created the Hoglund Foundation in 1989 as a way to help others and give back to the Dallas and Houston communities. Since its inception, the Foundation has contributed in excess of $20 million in funding to more than 500 agencies serving education, health and family support systems.
Hoglund is also Chairman and CEO of SeaOne Maritime Corporation, a new company that transports liquefied, compressed natural gas. Forrest is the retired Chairman of the Board and CEO of EOG Resources, Inc., one of the most active drillers of gas wells in the U.S. and Canada, a company he joined in 1987 and grew into one of the best performing independent oil and gas companies in the industry.
At The Real Estate Council's 2009 Community Breakfast, Mr. Hoglund will explore why individual and corporate social responsibility is so critical today. In his address on "Perfect Balance," Mr. Hoglund will disclose how he manages dynamic business risk and also takes big risks on cutting edge initiatives to advance the future of our community and change lives. He will share his success story about the Museum of Nature and Science and will highlight his passion for education and children - telling us about a "highly risky" investment in a totally new way to teach kids science and math.
At the breakfast, The Real Estate Council Foundation will also honor the nonprofit projects it supported financially through its Community Partners Program, and with members’ pro bono assistance in 2008.
The 2008 TREC Community Impact Initiative Recipients:
§ bcWORKSHOP - $38,000: Award-winning new home development for low-income and elderly homeowners on the historic Congo Street in Jubilee neighborhood.
§ City of Dallas Housing Department - $250,000: Pilot program in the City of Dallas Housing Department to provide nonprofits with project management expertise for target neighborhoods.
§ City of Dallas Economic Development Department - $275,000: Development action plans for four target neighborhoods to be prepared by McCormack Baron Salazar and presented to city of Dallas for public use.
§ Dallas Area Habitat for Humanity - $100,000: Strategic development action plan to identify development and infrastructure needs for Joppa neighborhood, the last intact Freedmen's town in southern Dallas.
§ Friends of Katy Trail/ TREC Young Guns - $32,000: Creation of a walkable, one-acre park on the north side of Katy Trail.
§ Innercity Community Development Corporation (ICDC) - $50,000: Pittman Place single-family subdivision in south Dallas/Fair Park for development of 19 energy-efficient homes for first-time homebuyers.
§ Joppa Rodeo - $35,000: Creation of new 4-H program; the rodeo is an initiative of Buffalo Soldiers and Halff Associates philanthropy.
§ Special Grants - $100,000: Includes Associate Leadership Council community project and Unsung Heroes Awards.
Special thanks goes to TREC’s Community Partners Program (CPP): Bank of America Foundation, Citi Foundation, Comerica, JPMorgan Chase Foundation, Marquette Financial Companies, Wachovia Foundation and Wells Fargo Foundation. TREC’s CPP is a vehicle in which businesses, foundations and financial institutions can donate funds that are coupled with TREC’s members’ expertise for specific grant recipients.
The Real Estate Council Foundation allows TREC members to invest their time and philanthropic dollars to support local communities. TREC Foundation contributes financial assistance and the professional expertise of its members to positively impact job creation, community revitalization, education and affordable housing. Since 1990, TREC Foundation has contributed $7 million in cash, along with $75 million in pro-bono professional expertise and direct added value to community renewal.
Tickets for the breakfast are as follows: associate TREC members are $35 prepaid or $40 at the door; nonmembers are $45 prepaid or $50 at the door. There is no charge for Sustaining and Full members if pre-registered.
