On Thursday June 12, Verna Cage of Van Alstyne was honored by the Northeast Texas Library System as Volunteer of the Year for Public Libraries serving under 12,000 at their annual Awards Luncheon. NETLS serves public libraries in 33 counties in the northeast corner of the state. This area contains over 3,000,000 people and covers 23,956 square miles. More than 95 libraries belong to the library system.

Verna Cage has been a dedicated supporter of the Friends of the Van Alstyne Public Library for the past sixteen years. She has willingly lent a helping hand at every Friend's function, whether it was sweeping floors, washing dishes, cooking meals, sorting and moving books for book sales, or making phone calls. She has provided funding to enhance the summer reading program and been tireless in her promotion of the library and the Friends. She is always eager to tell people about the library and the things the Friends have accomplished. Whenever planning for library expansion has been undertaken, she has been instrumental in the decision making.

Verna Cage is a recognized community leader and her support of the library both financially and with her time have helped establish the Van Alstyne Public Library as a vital community facility. She attends every City council meeting and speaks up for the library frequently. When she was chosen Chamber of Commerce Citizen of the Year in 1996, her support of the library was one of the many factors considered by the selection committee.

There is no way to count the hours Verna Cage has devoted to the promotion of the Van Alstyne Library in the past sixteen years. She continues to be a staunch supporter and an active participant in each and every endeavor undertaken by the Friends and the library, even at the age of 90.
