December 1, 2008 – Today in observance of World AIDS Day, Dallas County Health and Human Services (DCHHS) will offer free HIV testing at its main office at 2377 N. Stemmons.  The DCHHS Mobile Medical Clinic, in collaboration with AIDS Interfaith and the Mexican Consulate, will also offer free HIV testing at the Mexican Consulate, 8855 N. Stemmons Freeway, Dallas, TX  75247, today from 10am-2pm.  Leadership is the theme for World AIDS Day 2007 and 2008.

“Everyone can become a leader in the fight against AIDS by knowing their HIV status and taking personal responsibility to protect themselves and their partners,” said Zachary Thompson, DCHHS Director.

DCHHS encourages everyone to “Take Action and Lead,” by:
• getting tested for HIV;
• practicing safe methods to prevent HIV;
• deciding not to engage in high risk behaviors; and
• talking about HIV prevention with family, friends, and colleagues.

December 1st marks the 20th year of the observance of World AIDS Day. This worldwide effort is designed to: encourage public support and programming to prevent the spread of HIV infection; provide awareness and education about HIV/AIDS; and demonstrate compassion for those infected or affected by HIV.

World AIDS Day was first observed in 1988 after a summit of health ministers from around the world called for a spirit of social tolerance and a greater exchange of information on HIV/AIDS.

Worldwide the estimated number of people living with HIV is over 33 million. An estimated one million Americans are living with HIV. Approximately 25 percent are unaware of their HIV infection.
The DCHHS STD Program offers rapid testing, treatment, and partner notification at its clinics located at 2377 North Stemmons Freeway, Monday through Friday, from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

To schedule an appointment, call (214) 819-1819. DCHHS Mobile Medical Clinic travels to various locations around the County and offers free testing for HIV, syphilis, gonorrhea, and chlamydia. For more information on the Mobile Medical Clinic or for its schedule and locations, call (214) 819-2155.
