History and Genealogy Conference at Durant Nov. 15

The Three Valley Museum of Durant, Oklahoma, and the Friends of the Oklahoma Historical Society Archives (FOHSA) are hosting a Southeastern Oklahoma History and Genealogy Conference with a special emphasis on Choctaw history and culture.  The conference will be held Saturday, November 15, 2008, from 8:30 a.m.-5:00 p.m. at the First Presbyterian Church, 501 N. 15th, Durant.

Two simultaneous tracks of speakers will include Jack Pate, special
representative of Choctaw Chief Gregory Pyle, on the Choctaw removal and Dr. William Corbett on the Tishomingo World War II POW Camp. Other experts will speak on the Choctaw Academies, historic Fort Washita, the Steamboat "Heroine," Confederate grave research, and legal issues for museums.

Dr. Amanda Cobb-Greetham, Director of the Chickasaw Nation's History and Culture Division, and William Welge, Director of the OHS Research Division will also be featured speakers.  A traditional Choctaw meal at noon will be followed by a Native American flute performance by D. J. Battiest-Tomasi of Oklahoma City.

Price is $27 per person, including lunch ($35 after November 8). Additional lunches are available for $5. Checks should be made payable to FOHSA (a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization) and mailed to FOHSA, P. O. Box 18781, Oklahoma City, OK 73154-0781 or to the Three Valley Museum, P. O. Box 1191, Durant, OK 74701. All proceeds will purchase historic documents, photos, supplies and equipment for the Oklahoma Historical Society Archives and Three Valley Museum.
