SHERMAN, TEXAS — Austin College students and faculty have held several campus events in support of Breast Cancer Awareness Month in October. Kim Snipes, biology lab coordinator and safety officer, has been a principal organizer for these events.
“Someone is diagnosed with breast cancer every two minutes,” said Snipes, herself a breast cancer survivor. “Austin College is turning pink in October, joining the fight against this disease and in the efforts to find a cure.” Funds from the various efforts will benefit the Susan G. Komen for the Cure Foundation, the American Cancer Society, and the National Breast Cancer Foundation. Those seeking additional information about the Austin College events may contact Snipes at (903) 813-2545.
Beginning October 27, the women of Theta Sigma Chi sorority will sell raffle tickets, $1 each, for a drawing to be held in conjunction with the group’s annual Mr. AC contest October 30 at 7 p.m. in Sid Richardson Center of the Robert T. Mason Athletic-Recreation Complex. The raffle grand prize package is a ukulele, songbook, and CD autographed by singer/songwriter and musician Jack Johnson. An Asleep At The Wheel CD, autographed by all members of the group, will be among the prizes. Members of the community interested in participating in the raffle can send a check, payable to Austin College, to Cancer Raffle/Kim Snipes, 900 N. Grand Avenue Suite 61541, Sherman, Texas 75090. Cancer raffle should be included on the memo line. Snipes will fill out the appropriate tickets based upon the donation, then notify winners and mail any prizes to non-campus individuals. Snipes can be reached at (903) 813-2545 for more information.

The event will mark the official publication date for the book, co-sponsored by ’Roos Fighting Cancer, Austin College's Relay for Life Team, and “Telling our Stories,” an autobiographical writing program offered by Austin College professors Jerry Lincecum and Peggy Redshaw. Individuals who have previously ordered the book, including those ordered through the Herald Democrat, may pick up their copies during the reception and have them signed if desired. Books may be purchased at the reception for $15, including tax. All profits from the book sale go to the American Cancer Society. After the reception, books will be available at the Herald Democrat offices in Sherman and Denison. Only 750 copies of the book were printed.
