Cultural Exchange

Fourteen Sherman High School students enjoyed the privilege of the German/American Partnership Program (GAPP) this summer as they spent three weeks in Wolnzach, Germany, in state of Bavaria.

"This is my fourth year to participate in the GAPP cultural exchange program," explained Suzy Robinson, teacher and sponsor of the program, "and it is an absolutely incredible learning experience for our students."

Former SHS German teacher Marcia Stewart, made the initial contacts for involvement in this program as a way for students to truly experience the German culture. The GAPP program partners a German teen and family with an American teen and family, with each becoming a host family when visiting the perspective country. The GAPP program requirements include a welcoming and a farewell party for the exchange students, spending at least ten days in the classroom of the partnered student, a 3-4 day tour of surrounding areas, and each student must give a 15 minute presentation, of their choice, which demonstrates an aspect(characteristic) of youth in America. Salzburg, Austria, medieval castles, Mirabelle Gardens and the Berchtesgaden Salt Mines are just a few of the sites the group toured.

Students participating in this cultural exchange are Kelsi Burnett, Stephanie Mygrant, Meridith Mooney, Katie Plyler, Lara Myers, Alisha Haigis, Jordan Hancock, Kelsi Stephens, Morgan Lindsey, Alex Clark, Claire Cole, Joe Simpson, Trevor Walker, Justin Estes, SHS coordinating teacher, Suzy Robinson, and assistant teacher Sharla Mullens. In early September, fourteen German students will arrive at Sherman High School to complete the cultural exchange.

They will be hosted by the families of the fourteen SHS students who just returned from Germany.

7-on-7

This summer the Sherman Bearcats 7-on-7 team earned their first ever title in the 12-team Metroplex Championship Series. They claimed the championship trophy by beating Ft. Worth Brewer in the finals, 31-7. On July 11-12, they competed in the Vype Magazine Select 7-on-7 Championship at the University of Arkansas. There they won third place. Congratulations to the team and to Bearcat wide receiver Greg Jackson who won the Sticky Hands Award for performing as top receiver.

Where history happened!

Twenty students from Dillingham Intermediate School traveled to Washington D.C. this past June, learning more about American history than they ever imagined. Teacher/sponsor, Sharla Mullens coordinates a "historical places" trip for Dillingham students every year. This year’s trip included Washington D.C. monuments, the White House and Capitol, congress in session, several Smithsonian museums, Arlington Cemetery, Mt. Vernon, Colonial Williamsburg and Jamestown. Mrs. Mullens is so thankful for the opportunity to sponsor the group and also grateful for the parents who travel with her. A total of thirty-two joined Mullens this summer. Several students commented that it was the best vacation they had ever taken.
