Registration begins at 8:00 a.m. and the 6K run/walk starts at 9:00 a.m. There is a $25 entry fee. There is a special significance behind this race. In many developing countries it is common for water collectors, a task traditionally given to women and children, to walk six kilometers a day to supply the family with drinking water. Even the entry fee for this event is symbolic, because $25 will help WaterCan bring fresh water to a single person for life. WaterCan is a Canadian charity dedicated to ending poverty by helping the world’s poorest people gain access to clean water, basic sanitation and hygiene education. This event took hold in North Texas when Austin College student Marielle Remillard, who would like to become a water engineer, found WaterCan on the internet while doing research. Remillard contacted WaterCan and learned about the walk/runs held in Canada to create awareness about fact that 20% of the Earth's population doesn't have access to safe drinking water. "Water conservation is probably the most important issue in today's world," said Remillard, the visionary point person for this event, "and I am doing my part to help spread the word to save the world one drop of water at a time." "Water is the single most uniting factor in the world," added Liz Wilson, one of the Walk for Water coordinators. Remillard asked Kassie Lee and several other friends at Austin College if they would be interested in making this event happen. The support has been remarkable. "The student body has been extremely excited to partner with us on this event," explains Lee. "We weren't sure what the response would be, but we have over 50 student volunteers who are going to be working the day of the race, and just as many are participating. The number of people who want to be involved and raise awareness has overwhelmed me. It has been such a great experience seeing the enthusiasm that has swept the campus for this event. The faculty is also very excited, and several have either donated money, are participating in the raise, or are sponsoring students to run in their place." "However, we obviously can't do this by ourselves," Lee continued. "There are several organizations on campus who have helped with fundraising, organization and volunteers. They are: Rotaract, Alpha Phi Omega (the national service fraternity), Pre-Med Society, Indian Cultural Association, Student International Organization, and Asian Student Association." "I think that Walk for Water is a great cause because everyone deserves access to clean water." - Eddie Newton, donator "Walk for Water brings the reality of so many east Africans into our reality as we join them in their struggle to reach water. It is a necessary collision of two worlds to show hope and find understanding." - Santhra Sebastian, runner and volunteer © Copyright 2002-2005 by North Texas e-News, llc. |
