Yesterday they were polishing the chrome on classic cars and trucks, or maybe even polishing up the old John Deere. Today they all roll into historic downtown Bonham for a daylong festival that features events for the entire family.
The 2nd Annual Heritage Day Celebration on July 26 is shaping up to be an even bigger event that the inaugural downtown summer festival in 2007. This year, the car & truck show has more entries, more tractors will participate, a motorcycle fun run has been added and the tricycle tractor pull is sure to be a photographer's delight.
Another event that should be very interesting to watch will be the fireman's rodeo. Scheduled to run from 1:00 p.m. until 3:30 p.m., this will match up all the local fire departments in a spirited competition.
Legacy Ridge Auto Plex has joined the celebration this year, so, in addition to looking over classic vehicles, this year you can also look at all the amenities the new models have to offer.
One of the most informative events for young bicyclists will be the bicycle rodeo/bicycle safety course.
Of course, many of the favorite events from last year are back again. Cowboy poets will be spinning tales of early Texas from 8:00 a.m. until 10:00 a.m. at the Creative Arts Center. Square dancers will be spinning each other around at 2:00 p.m. The Colgate Country Showdown begins at 10:00 a.m.
Another favorite from last year, the 12th Cavalry will take aim and shoot it out at 8:30 a.m., 11:30 a.m. and 3:00 p.m.
Kids of all ages enjoy the 12th Cavalry performances and this would also be an excellent time to take the family on a tour of Fort Inglish.
Bonham also has one of the finest historical museums you will find anywhere in a town this size, so that might offer a respite from the summer sun while you learn more about the history of the region. Don't forget to stop by the Sam Rayburn House Museum and the Sam Rayburn Library Museum, too.
Vendors will be set up around the courthouse, offering a variety of food and merchandise.
So, come early and plan to enjoy a full day of activities that have been planned in downtown Bonham. The chuck wagon breakfast will begin a 7:00 a.m. After the flag ceremony and a welcome speech, the music will start with Marshall Ray Ashby and Wild Fire performing on the west side of the Fannin County Courthouse.
As special thanks goes out to the wonderful sponsors that help make this annual celebration a very special day in Bonham: American Bank of Texas, Fannin Bank in Bonham & Honey Grove, Legacy Ridge Auto Plex, Legend Bank, RiverBend Restaurant, VPG, Wal-Mart, and Red River Regional Hospital.
