CITY OF COMMERCE, TEXAS, June 27, 2008—Scooter Brockette, USDA Rural Development Acting State Director, announced the City of Commerce was selected to receive $14,000 through the agency’s Community Facilities Grant Program.  The grant funds will be used in conjunction with City funds to purchase audio and visual equipment for the police and fire station.

“This funding will provide new monitors, projectors, and remote systems throughout the police and fire station,” said Brockette.  “USDA Rural Development is committed to providing assistance to rural towns and communities to help them provide valuable services to their residents.”

In Fiscal Year 2007, a total of $882,000 in Community Facility Grants was obligated in Texas.  Funds are used to enhance the quality of life for residents of rural areas by providing the means for construction, expansion, or enhancement of community facilities, telecommunication and distance education programs, and water and waste disposal systems.  These programs are important because they supply a number of growth opportunities to communities with improved utility facilities, increased job availability, and technology and educational resources.

USDA Rural Development was created in 1994 to serve Texas’ more than 3.6 million rural residents.  For further information regarding USDA Rural Development Programs, contact the McKinney Area Office at (972) 542-0081, Extension 4, or visit our website at http://www.rurdev.usda.gov/tx/.
