Children at the Van Alstyne Public Library celebrated Dad’s Day last week by listening to two special fathers.  City manager Bill Herrington read stories to children on Tuesday and on Wednesday, Merrill Hazelton read stories and told “How Pa Shot the Tractor.”

Donuts, juice and coffee were provided by Diamond’s Grocery Store.  Children created fantastic cards that folded out to spell “DAD” for their own super fathers.

On Thursday, the Southwest Dairy Farms paid a visit to the library and brought Buttercup, the cow.  Aaron Sanders taught 59 children and 35 parents about the importance of milk.  Buttercup and Aaron performed the finale by squirting milk out at the kids just before he attached the milking machine.  All watched the huge glass jug fill with fresh milk.  The celebration ended with a favorite milk product – ice cream.

On Tuesday and Wednesday, the preschool story time will be Three Bears Cha Cha Cha.  Wear sunglasses!  On Thursday, Bead-It is the family activity at 2:00.  Learn to make sun catchers out of beads.

Several years ago, Pearl Ebensberger was in charge of arranging exhibits by local artists. The library is re-establishing the exhibits.

Our first exhibit is watercolors by Delores Collins.  They will be displayed for two months.

Mrs. Collins writes:

Art became an important part of my life in 1990.  After pursuing art classes at Grayson County College for several years, I continued my studies under many talented local artists and have been fortunate to attend workshops with well known artists such as Xiang Zhang, Doug Walton, and Paula Nemec.

My work consists mostly of landscapes and florals, and with each painting I try to capture a realistic moment in time, in a natural setting that may evoke a relaxing calmness or memory.

I participate in juried shows in the Texoma area and have won several awards.  I am also an active member of the Sherman Art League, judge for children’s art shows, demonstrate watercolor techniques for local schools and have taught beginners watercolor classes.

My work is included in several collections here in the Texoma area as well as Dallas, Houston, Colorado, California, and several other states.  Pictures are on display at Images Gallery in Denison.
