Wolfe City -- District 12A softball gave local sports fans another nail biter Tuesday when the Dodd City Lady Hornets rallied to slip by the Wolfe City Lady Wolves, 8-7.

Wolfe City served notice from the beginning that Dodd City was in for a challenge.  The Lady Wolves scored in the bottom of the first frame and held that 1-0 lead for a couple of innings, but the Lady Hornets answered with a pair of runs to take a 2-1 lead after the third inning.

Wolfe City hit the ball hard all day and the Lady Wolves erupted for three runs in the bottom of the fourth inning for a 5-2 advantage.

Dodd City got one run back in the top of the fifth to cut the lead to two runs, but Wolfe City's Lindsey Wilkinson slammed a two-run shot over the center field fence and the Lady Wolves were suddenly only six outs away from a 7-3 victory.

But a lot can happen in two innings.

Sidnee Horton and Katie Pickering singled to start the sixth inning.  Dodd City plated one runner and then Hailey Spindle drove in two runs to make it a one run ball game.  A sharply hit ground ball by Kamey Herpeche tied the contest and a hard hit grounder by Sarah Smeltzer gave Dodd City an 8-7 lead.

Wolfe City put the bat on the ball in their last two at bats, but outstanding defensive plays by Chelsie Lappin, Cecily Darwin and Katie Pickering preserved the win

The Dodd City girls improve to 10-3 in District 12-A with the victory and the Lady Hornets close out district play against Trenton on Friday.
