Dallas Heritage Village at Old City Park The premier living history museum of the Southwest, offers visitors a glimpse into Dallas and North Texas life from 1840 to 1910 with permanent and temporary exhibits throughout 38 historic structures located on 13 acres.
During the fall and spring, the Village highlights historical themes and brings them to life through first-person characters dressed in period clothing. Self-guided and docent-led tours available. 1515 South Harwood (one block south of Farmers Market). Hours of operation are Tues-Sat, 10 a.m. – 4 p.m.; Sun, Noon – 4 p.m.
Regular admission is $7 for adults, $5 for seniors 65+ and $4 for children ages 4-12. Admission during the summer and winter months (June 15 to September 14 and January 2 to February 15) is $5 for adults, $4 for seniors 65+ and $3 for children ages 4-12. APRIL ACTIVITIES
- NOW THROUGH JULY 13: “1893 World’s Fair” is the historic theme highlighted by the Village now through July 13, 2008. The influence of the 1893 World’s Fair in Chicago on Dallas and Texas residents is brought to life in special exhibits and through historically costumed characters sharing their Fair plans and visits. Free with museum admission.
- APRIL 19, 10 AM – 4 PM: “Art in Action” The south central United States outdoor painting event, Plein Air Texas 2008, hosted by Dallas’ Southwest Gallery and the Outdoor Painters’ Society, will hold a “Quick Draw.” Artists will paint a different outdoor spring view of Dallas Heritage Village from 10 a.m. to noon. All paintings will be framed and on display in the Chautauqua Pavilion from 12:30 p.m. to 3 p.m. Attendees will have an opportunity to purchase and vote on their favorite paintings. After the event, paintings will be on display at the Southwest Gallery located at 4500 Sigma Road. Saturday, April 19, 10 a.m. – 4 p.m. Free with museum admission.
- APRIL 23, 10:30 AM: “Nip and Tuck’s Barnyard Buddies Storytime for Preschoolers,” named after Dallas Heritage Village’s Mammoth Jack Donkeys, Nip and Tuck, parents and preschoolers are invited to join us this spring in the barn behind Millermore, the Village’s pre-Civil War mansion, for a story or two and to make a craft relating to the month’s theme. The theme for April, “Springtime Tales.” We’ll be reading Little Farmer Joe by Ian Whybrow and Don’t Eat the Bluebonnets by Ellen Leventhal. - APRIL 26, NOON & 1 PM: “High Noon Gun Fights” are back the 2nd and 4th Saturday of the month at the Village. Visitors will get a firsthand view of the “Wild West” when a mild disagreement turns into a gun fight on Main Street. Saturdays, April 26 at Noon and 1 p.m. Free with museum admission.

- MAY 1, 7 PM: Chautauqua Lecture Series: Legends, Yarns and Fables Storytelling Concert is an evening of professional storytelling in the Chautauqua Pavilion when members of the Dallas Storytelling Guild share some of their best tales. Join Leslie Buie, Pat Carr, Tim Couch, Reagin Hults, Richard Nash, Ann Marie Newman and Jiaan Powers for an evening of historic storytelling including narratives on the Village’s spring theme of the 1893 World’s Fair. - MAY 15, 7 PM: “Chautauqua Lecture Series” continues with an evening lecture featuring Laurence Yadon, co-author with Dan Anderson of 200 Texas Outlaws and Lawmen: 1835-1935. Yadon discusses some of the infamous Texas’ law breakers included in his literally “hot of the presses” reference book. He will concentrate on the profiles of such notorious Texas figures as Sam Bass, Belle Starr and others. Staged gun fight on the Village’s 1901 Main Street will follow the lecture. All are invited to meet the author and gun fighters in the Alamo Saloon for a reception and book signing. Admission is $5 for the evening; members are free.
