It's time for the Commerce Humane Association Awards Reception.  The reception will start May 29 at 6:00 p.m. at Ben E. Keith, 2248 Live Oak in Commerce. Annual awards for service to animals in the Hunt and surrounding counties area are presented.

The Halliday Award has been presented annually since the 1970's.  It started in memory of one of the founders of the CHA.

The Helen Tuerk Youth award is limited to young people who spend time helping animals.  This special youth award sponsored by Richard Tuerk in memory of his mother.

The Professional Award is specifically for those working in the animal care field. In addition to these awards, CHA takes this opportunity to officially thank all those who help with the ongoing goal of making this area a place where no animal goes uncared for, unloved, or unfed.

A presentation of the work done on the Frank Barchard Memorial Animal Shelter, a no kill facility off Hwy 11 near Wolfe City and a part of the CHA, will be done.  The public is invited to attend, enjoy refreshments and find out more about what is going on to make this area a better place for animals and thus better place for people.

Nominations for the Halliday Award, the Helen Tuerk Youth Award and the Professional Award will be accepted from the public. The deadline is May 10, which is also Tag Day.  Please send nominations to CHA, PO Box 2, Commerce, TX 75429, or online to awards@commercehumane.com.  Nominations can also be submitted through the website at www.commercehumane.com.

Tag Day 2008 will be held Saturday, May 10 between 10 am and 2 pm.  Tag Day is an opportunity for pet owners, those who want to have pets or those who love animals to find out more about services available for animals in this area.

Commerce Humane Association organizes this event, which includes many different sides of the animal equation.  CHA itself provides information to the public, some assistance in the form of grants, rescues and shelters and adopts animals from its no-kill facility and promotes the humane treatment of animals.  Joining in the event is Radar Rescue, a group of people who travel to disaster areas to rescue animals in danger.

Radar Rescue was one of the groups helping in Louisiana after Hurricane Katrina.  PetDegrees Pet Supercenter is our local pet store and a great source for anything pet related.  The City of Commerce Animal Shelter is the local government entity responsible for safety related aspects of animals and people.  $5 Rabies vaccines will be administered by a local veterinarian between 12 and 2pm.  $20 micro chipping will be provided by Radar Rescue.  Microchipping can cost as much as $70 in some areas.

City tags will be available.  A children's pet contest (children under 12) will be between noon and 2pm.  This year we will be adding dog washing.  So bring your pet and let us bath him or her for you for a nominal cost.  All animals should be on leashes or in crates for their safety, and according to city codes.

It you have question please contact the Frank Barchard Memorial Animals shelter at 903/496-2412, the Commerce City Shelter or stop by PetDegrees.  Remember to spay or neuter your pets to reduce the number of pets in our local shelters.
