Bonham, Texas – April 2, 2007 - - Members of Trenton Middle School Beta Club wanted to get involved with Fannin County Habitat and had visions of hammering and sawing and pouring concrete! Unfortunately, the members were just not quite old enough to get involved in the actual construction process.
Rather than being disheartened however, they got creative and by various different means raised an impressive total of $500 for Fannin County Habitat! The check was presented to Board Chair Lisbeth Echeandia at the school on April 2.
“There are so many opportunities for youth to get involved with Habitat,” explains Board Member and Volunteer Coordinator,” Eva Fryar. “Of course the actual construction is where so many young volunteers would like to participate and because of safety rules and insurance we just can’t use them at the building site.” Eva made a presentation about Habitat to the Beta Club recently and inspired them to get involved. “We love to see our local young people get involved in our projects,” Eva continues. “I’m always impressed with the commitment and enthusiasm we get from our younger volunteers and I encourage anyone interested in participating in our current Habitat project to call us. We have a great list of youth activity ideas so there is no shortage of ways young people can help us achieve our goal of building affordable, decent housing for local families in need.”
Habitat for Humanity of Fannin County has started the build of the third Habitat home in Fannin County – in Honey Grove – and this donation is another big step toward making that home a reality.
“I also want to remind your readers that Habitat is not a ‘giveaway program.’ In addition to a down payment and the monthly mortgage payments, homeowners invest hundreds of hours of their own labor – “sweat equity” – into building their house and the houses of others,” Eva adds.
