Commerce traveled back to Wills Point on Saturday to try and make a sweep of this year's tournaments by winning the championship trophy but the Lady Tigers fell one game short of the title.
The first match had Commerce versus Wills Point in a match of district foes. Wills Point came out on fire, winning the first game 25-12.
"I was really disappointed about how my girls came out to play this morning," Commerce head coach Kelsey Hall noted. "We were flat and couldn't pass a ball to get anything going. I told the girls that their tournament depended on this next game. They could win this game and keep playing for a championship or they could lose and go to the consolation side of the tournament for the first time in two years."
Game two had Commerce and Wills Point battling it out in a close game that saw Commerce sneak by with a 25-21 win. In the third game, Commerce came out with something to prove as they jumped to a big lead and kept adding on to that lead to take a 25-11 win.
"I was pleased with the girls on the way they turned their game up," Coach Hall remarked. "We executed really well and we saw the results of that."
In the second match of the day Commerce was up against last year's 2A state semi-finalist in Harmony.
"I knew Harmony was going to be tough," Hall stated. "I saw them last year and with everyone from that team returning, I knew they were going to give us a challenge."
Midway through the first game the score was 15-14 in favor of Harmony.
"During a Harmony time out I told the girls to change coverage," Hall recalled. "We did, but we also watched a excellent block from Yakira Essix drop and hit between three Commerce defenders. And that was it. Harmony was able to finish the game off with a 10-5 run, taking the first game 25-19."
In the second game Commerce was able to jump out to an early lead only to see that slowly chipped away by Harmony's defense and excellent attack offense. Commerce was able to keep up with Harmony but once again fell short 25-21.
For the final match for Commerce on the night and playing for the third place trophy, Commerce was pitted against Class 5A North Mesquite.
"I was worried about the girls' intensity for the game because we have been sitting all day, but they came out and rolled points off pretty easily," Coach Hall explained.
Commerce was able to build a sizable lead and the Lady Tigers were able to hold on to that for the rest of the game, raking in a 25-14 win. Game two saw much of the same as Commerce was able to get another lead and never let it go as the Lady Cats hammered out 29 kills from five different players. When the match was over Commerce was able to take a 25-18 win and the third place trophy.
"I told the girls I was proud of them," Hall said. "For many of these girls this is their sixth tournament trophy that is third place or higher in the last two years. The girls have been working non-stop these last three weekends and the rewards are excellent."
The Commerce Lady Tigers record is now 20-3. Next up for the Lady Tigers is Canton at home on Tuesday which is followed up by Sulpher Springs North Hopkins on Friday at 4:30.
