Jalapeno, avocado, and vanilla - just to name a few of this year’s competing flavors

McKINNEY, Texas  – Looking for something cool and refreshing during the summer heat? Here's the scoop … or two: McKinney's 11th Annual Killis Melton Ice Cream Crank-Off presented by McKinney Main Street and Clyde’s on the Square, is set for August 12 in historic downtown McKinney. The event runs from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

A new addition to this year’s event is the premiere of Doc n’ Clyde’s, a museum located at Clyde’s on the Square that features more than 300 antique ice cream freezers and ice cream memorabilia.

“It is a way to preserve American history through Ice Cream,” Clyde Geer, owner of Clyde’s on the Square said. “People have a fond memory of making homemade ice cream, and I believe the museum will help many relive one of the greatest pastimes of all times.”

The ice cream contest is open to the public and pre-registration is not required.  Contestants should arrive by 10:00 a.m. with an ice cream freezer (minimum one gallon to enter contest) and pre-mixed ingredients (all dairy products must be pasteurized and no raw eggs). Salt and Ice will be furnished by Clyde’s on the Square.

At 1:00 p.m., the public is invited to sample the various ice creams. $3 donations will be taken for the Leslie Geer Memorial Fund benefiting the McKinney Education Foundation in front of Clyde’s in exchange for a sample cup.

Trophies will be awarded in seven categories: “Best Vanilla,” “Best Chocolate,” “Best Fruit or Nut,” “Best Gourmet”, “Best You Made What?”, “Taster’s Choice”, and “Overall Presentation”.

“This is one of downtown’s most fun and anticipated family events,” said Ty Lake, McKinney Main Street program director. “And with the summer heat on high, it couldn’t have come at a better time. Ice cream is about the only match for the Texas heat – and the historic downtown setting lends itself to a day of ice cream sampling, shopping and dining.”

Along with the unique and flavorful ice cream, event goers can enjoy the presence of stilt walkers, clowns, jugglers, face painters, and plenty of activities for the whole family to enjoy! Live performances include Razzamajjazz Dixieland band and McKinney Community Band along with several other musical artists throughout downtown.
