SHERMAN, TEXAS -- Austin College’s 157th academic year came to an official close Sunday, May 14, with approximately 317 Bachelor of Arts candidates and 24 Master of Arts in Teaching candidates participating in commencement ceremonies.

The commencement address was offered by former Dallas mayor Ron Kirk, a 1976 graduate of Austin College, and now a partner with the law firm of Vinson & Elkins in Dallas. Graduating senior Rachel Baumann of San Antonio, Texas, was selected by her classmates to present the senior address. .

Kirk, along with baccalaureate speaker Jimmie D. Johnson, pastor of First Presbyterian Church of Waco, Texas, and Bob Hunter of the Texas House of Representatives, received honorary Doctor of Humane Letters degrees during the ceremonies. A surprise honorary doctorate also was awarded to Austin College Board of Trustee chair Robert J. Wright of Dallas.

During commencement each year, the J.C. Kidd and J.M. Robinson Scholarship medals are awarded to the graduates with the highest academic record. The faculty selects the recipients, with no distinction between them, on the basis of students’ entire academic records. In 2005, faculty members were unable to distinguish between the top three students. The medals were awarded to Zeeshan Danawala of Carrollton, Texas; Carly Hale of Sherman, Texas; and Elizabeth R. Hoffman of Boerne, Texas.

Students with an "Honors in" designation completed a senior honors thesis or project in that discipline through the Austin College Departmental Honors Program. Students are invited to complete honors work by the department faculty. Eighteen students completed honors work.

Those designated summa cum laude have earned a grade point average of 3.85 or higher on a 4.0 scale; magna cum laude 3.70 to 3.84; and cum laude, 3.5 to 3.69.
