Bonham Warriors win over Royse City 7-6
By Mark Rattan
Apr 24, 2006
In the first half of the game, it was all Bonham as Clint Stroud pitched four shutout innings allowing only one hit, walking two, and producing three K’s.
With one out, the Warriors struck first in the second inning when Jimmie Allred reached on a single, and Casey Hill followed with another one-bagger. Josh Gammons reached on an error to load the bases, but Jacob Gammons flew out to right field for the second out.
Not letting the opportunity slide by, Freshman Josh Lawson ripped a 3-RBI double to clear the bases and put the Warriors on top 3-0.
Bonham added two more runs in the third when Tyler Rattan worked a walk and Stroud helped himself out with a homerun jack over the centerfield wall to make it 5-0.
With the game seemingly in complete control, the Bulldogs ripped off 4 straight hits in the bottom of the 5th, closing the gap to 1 run and giving the game a whole new look.
They didn’t stop there, as
Josh Gammons relieved Stroud and finished out the 6th inning with no more damage, but the Warriors were now trailing and playoff hopes were in jeopardy.
In the top of the 7th, Jacob Gammons led off with a single, and Lawson followed suite with his own single. With Dustin Stewart pinch running for Gammons, Zach Keene hit into an infield fly rule which caught Stewart off the bag for a disastrous double play.
With two outs, Blake Slawson came up to bat and was hit by the first pitch to put him on board with Lawson at second. Rattan came up next and after working a full count, he ripped a single that scored Lawson to tie the game. Stroud came right behind him and hit another RBI single to score Slawson and the Warriors were back on top as the top of the 7th inning ended 7-6 Warriors.
In the back half of the last inning,
A ground out to Casey Hill ended the contest, and the Warriors moved to 5-3 in District 9-3A…good enough for second place behind Van Alstyne.
Although Stroud had a good start, Josh Gammons got the win, putting him at 3-2 for the season. Curtis Saxton got the loss for RC, as they moved to 3-5 in district play.
Bonham will host Community Tuesday night, and then travel to Van Alstyne for their District finale.
In other District 9-3A action, Van Alstyne won again over Farmersville, and Princeton beat Community to round out the 6-team district.
Van Alstyne has control at 8-0, with Bonham owning second place at 5-3. Farmersville is 4-4, with Royse City sliding to 3-5, and Community and Princeton are tied at 2-6.
