Dickman will give a presentation on his work at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, June 30, in Room 131 of the Wathena Temple Fine Arts Building. The public is invited to attend, but limited seating will be available. A former Dallas Times Herald photographer who has shot numerous assignments for National Geographic and traveled to nearly 50 countries, Dickman will be one of three professional photographers who will lead The Working Photographer Workshop on the day-to-day process of photojournalism and editorial digital photography. The ATPI Workshop for Instructors will begin Wednesday, June 29, and wrap up about 11:30 a.m. Saturday, July 2. Approximately 50 high school photography, art, journalism, industrial technology, and vocational education teachers from Texas, Colorado, New Mexico, and Kansas have registered for the workshop, the largest group in the 12 years of the program. The teachers will be taking classes ranging from Adobe InDesign used in publications work to Convergent Media, which teachers can use to develop interactive multimedia projects for the classroom. Teachers will also get an opportunity to grab a camera and head to a different location every day to shoot photos and get lessons specific to the situation. Dickman, who grew up in Dallas, began working at the Times Herald in 1970. He began by shooting all types of stories -- from spot news to sports and features -- and was promoted to shooting three to five assignments a day, ranging from local news to sports and social events. Later, he began traveling to cover major news events, and in 1982, the Times Herald sent Dickman to cover the war in El Salvador. In '83, he won a Pulitzer Prize for his work. While working in El Salvador, he came close to being executed. "We tried to travel in groups and wore bullet proof vests," he told Lynne Eodice in PHOTOgraphic Magazine Online. Dickman's diverse assignments have included the Olympics, six Super Bowls, and the 40th anniversary of the bombing of Hiroshima. His work has appeared in such magazines as National Geographic Adventure, Life, TIME, Conde Nast Traveler, FORTUNE, Forbes, and American Way Magazine. His corporate clients have included EDS, Hewlett-Packard, and Nike. The ATPI Summer Workshop is hosted on campus by the A&M-Commerce Department of Art and photography associate professor Stan Godwin. Sponsors for the workshop include Adobe, Apple Computers, B&H Photo and Video, Olympus America, and Photo Imaging Education Association.
