The McKinney Independent School District Board of Trustees met in a special work session on Saturday morning and approved the hiring of an athletic director, director of fine arts and director of data management, budget and employee benefits. The board approved the hiring of Keith Garinger as the district
"Keith is bringing a wealth of experience to McKinney," said Tom Crowe, superintendent of schools for McKinney ISD. "He has the vision to move us into the future, a focus on excellence in everything he does, and the ability to bring people together for the common good."
Garinger, currently an educational consultant of the leadership institute for school improvement with Region XIII, has more than 30 years experience in coaching, teaching and public school administration. In addition to his position with Region XIII, Garinger is also currently an adjunct professor for the alternative certification program with Texas Lutheran University.
Garinger received his bachelor’s degree from the University of Houston in 1974 and a master’s degree in education, also from the University of Houston, in 1978.
Garinger began his career as a teacher and coach in Danbury ISD in 1974 and has served as an assistant principal, principal and assistant superintendent throughout his career. Prior to joining Region XIII, Garinger served as the assistant superintendent of human resources for Seguin ISD from 2000-2004. He was the principal at New Braunfels High School from 1997 to 2000 and the principal at Jane Long Middle School in Bryan ISD from 1992-1997.
Garinger is married to Debbie, who is the principal at New Braunfels High School. They have three children. Their daughter is currently attending Texas State University, one of their sons is currently in the U.S. Army, and their other son was recently drafted by the Carolina Panthers.
"I have known Keith for more than 20 years and I have seen his ability to build trust among stakeholders," Crowe added. "I have also witnessed his passion for success for students and programs. All of McKinney will benefit from having Keith Garinger as a vital part of the MISD family."
Garinger will oversee all athletic operations with the district, which currently includes four middle schools, (Dowell, Evans, Faubion and Scott Johnson), and two high schools, (McKinney High and McKinney North High). The district is scheduled to open its third high school, McKinney Boyd High School, in the fall of 2006. Student athletes at McKinney High and McKinney North High School currently compete in district 9-4A.
Roy Renzenbrink was approved by the board to be the district’s first director of fine arts.
Renzenbrink, currently the principal at Wolford Elementary School, has more than 25 years of experience in education, including 17 years as a band director in several school districts. He began his career in teaching in 1979 as the head band director at Carrollton Middle School in Carrollton, Ohio. He is currently a member of the Texas Music Educator's Association.
Renzenbrink has served as the assistant band director at Bryan Adams High School, the head band director at Gaston Middle School in Dallas, and as the head band director at McDonald’s Middle School in Mesquite. In 1996 Renzenbrink became the assistant principal at Dan F. Long Middle School in Carrollton ISD and then moved into the McKinney ISD school district as the assistant principal at Dowell Middle School in 1999. He became the principal at Reuben Johnson Elementary School in 2001 and moved to Wolford Elementary in 2002.
"There were strong candidates from both inside MISD as well as outside of our district," Crowe said. "Roy’s experiences with middle and high school programs, as well as his understanding of the elementary program, were certainly important considerations. He has some outstanding thoughts about how the fine arts programs can work hand-in-hand with the city of McKinney to build an even stronger partnership. I look forward to Roy’s leadership moving from the campus base to having a district-wide influence."
Renzenbrink received his bachelor of music education degree from Bowling Green State University in Bowling Green, Ohio in 1979. He earned his master’s of education and mid-management certification from the University of North Texas in 1993.
The McKinney ISD director of fine arts will be responsible for coordinating activities, supervising instruction, administrating budgets and directing the curriculum of the music, theater arts, art, drill team, cheerleading and non-athletic UIL programs for all grade levels.
The board also approved Jason Bird as the district’s new director of data management, budget and employee benefits. The newly created position for the district will report to Stephen Fortenberry, chief financial officer for the district.
Bird, currently an assistant principal at Scott Johnson Middle School, will oversee the budget and cash management system for the district, employee benefits and the Public Education Information Management System (PEIMS).
Bird received a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering from Texas A&M University in College Station in 1990 and a master’s in business administration from Texas A&M Commerce in 1998. He also earned a master’s in education from Texas A&M in Commerce in 2001 and is in the process of completing his doctorate in political economy from the University of Texas at Dallas.
Bird is a registered investment advisor with the Texas State Securities Board and a chartered financial consultant.
"Jason’s thirst for knowledge, his knowledge of MISD and his understanding of finances and economics make him a wonderful match for this position," said Crowe. "While this is a new position for MISD, the cost was virtually neutral as some re-alignment of duties have taken place in the business office to provide a more efficient system within this office."
Bird first joined McKinney ISD in 1998 as an economics instructor at McKinney High School.
