Mesquite seminar offers college experience to area students on Nov. 14
Texas A&M University-Commerce faculty will give area middle school and high school students the college classroom experience as part of the Middle School and High School Academic Enrichment Workshop on Saturday, Nov. 14 at the A&M-Commerce Metroplex Center in Mesquite.

Grossology: The (Impolite) Science of the Human Body, presented by Baylor Medical Center at Frisco through January 3, 2010
Sci-Tech Discovery Center will host the traveling children’s exhibit, Grossology: The (Impolite) Science of the Human Body, presented by Baylor Medical Center at Frisco from October 3, 2009 through January 3, 2010. After ten years in development, Sci-Tech Discovery Center, a 501 (c) 3 nonprofit organization, will open in its new permanent 11,000 square foot home at the southeast corner of the Dallas North Tollway access road and Cotton Gin Road in Frisco on October 3. This milestone is made possible by the City of Frisco and the first exhibit, Grossology’s, presenting sponsor, Baylor Medical Center at Frisco.

Austin College students spending fall in international sites
This fall, while many students were checking class supply lists and consulting course schedules, nearly 50 Austin College students were checking their passports and consulting international airline timetables in preparation for a semester of study abroad experiences.

GCC program gains national attention
Grayson County College’s “It’s MY Life!” project won top honors for Employer Partnership from the National Association for Tech Prep Leadership (NATPL) recently. Cindy Powell, executive director of Texoma Tech Prep at the college, accepted the award during the organization’s conference in Atlanta.

Reading With a Warrior
On Fridays, the 2009 Purple Warriors went to different classrooms and visited with our elementary students. The visits consisted of reading to the students, performing skits, having lunch with them or simply having a question and answer session with the students.

Tom Bean 5th graders take electronic field trip to Great Smoky Mountains
Even though it sounds unlikely, Tom Bean Elementary School 5th graders had an opportunity to search for life in the Great Smoky Mountains Tuesday, November 03, 2009. In fact, Mrs. Lisa Courtney, 5th grade Science teacher, took them on an electronic field trip sponsored by the National Park Service during a one-hour webcast. Mrs. Courtney projected the webcast on her SMARTBoard and used some of their interactive lessons preceding and following the show.

St. Luke's School honors Austin College professor
Dr. Peter DeLisle, director of Austin College’s Posey Leadership Institute, was recognized this fall by St. Luke’s Episcopal School in Denison. He provided support and leadership workshops for the St. Luke’s school board for two years.

UNT to offer degree options at new Collin Higher Education Center
UNT President Gretchen M. Bataille will participate in a signing ceremony that will formalize the creation of the center at 4 p.m. on Nov. 9 (Monday). The ceremony will be held at Collin College’s Central Park Campus Library, which is located at 2200 W. University Drive in McKinney.

Dodd City ISD receives Gold Performance Acknowledgments from Texas Education Agency
These acknowledgments recognize districts and campuses for high academic performance on indicators other than those used for accountability ratings. Dodd City ISD received acknowledgment in 10 of the 13 designated district areas. These acknowledgments are a result of the high expectations and hard work of the faculty, staff, students and parents of the Dodd City Independent School District.

McKinney High School corrects coding errors, must carry unacceptable rating for one year
The Texas Education Agency (TEA) denied McKinney ISD's appeal of an Unacceptable Rating at McKinney High School due to coding errors. The campus was penalized on its student completion rate for not accurately coding students who withdrew during the school year. The campus identified the eight students needed to move them to an acceptable rating, however, TEA denied the appeal on the grounds of missing the deadline for submission of student data.
