The start of a new school year is a special occasion for children, making it important for parents to be there to share the joy and provide support. It's also a good time to remind parents of the importance of making regular child support payments.

As I see it...
It was nice to see a young man, Thomas Standlee, honored last evening by TCOG at the City Council meeting. Twelve-year-old Standlee called 9-1-1 when his mother appeared to be having a heart attack, remained calm, answered the dispatcher’s questions better than some adults, and provided updates on his mother’s condition until the an ambulance arrived.

However, experts say that one’s brain is not fully developed until age twenty-one. This means that common sense and memory retention are only operating at half strength.

Steps to take when a company goes out of business
The most important step is simple. Customers should always maintain meticulous records of every transaction. Invoices, sales receipts, credit card slips, sales representatives' names and other documentation are vitally important to recovering refunds or merchandise. Whenever possible, customers should pay for goods only after the products are delivered. If a vendor requires an up-front payment, customers should try to negotiate the deposit down to the lowest possible amount.

For the love of tomatoes
Even after the Spanish and Italians started consuming them, many people still thought tomatoes, a member of the nightshade botanical family, were poisonous. When the tomato was introduced to the stock market in 1812, two aficionados with an investment to protect, proved the fruit was harmless with the strongest argument possible. They ate tomatoes in public. Oddly, at one time, some people also thought the tomato was an aphrodisiac, a belief that, apparently, no one wanted to prove - or disprove - in the public forum.

Hope and change
We had hope and then came change. Hope of a delicious harvest has faded. Grasshoppers devoured our tree and ate the bark from it as well. Hope changed and change may prove to be the end of my once luscious tree. Hope has changed and now our hope is that the tree has strength to survive.
