BookShelf...notes from the Van Alstyne Public Library

Nov 3, 2009

October and spooky trick-or-treating is over.  I am looking forward to one of my favorite holidays.  Between frantic preparations for Halloween and the seemingly earlier- ever-year Christmas season, Thanksgiving often gets short changed.  Take some time in the next few weeks to count your blessings.  I am counting blessings at the Van Alstyne Library.

First of all, I am thankful for the wonderful patrons who come to the library for books, DVDs, and other materials and stay a little while to visit.  I知 thankful for their generous donations of materials to supplement and expand our collection.  I知 thankful for the excited faces of children as they tell me about a book they like or show off the craft they just made during story time.  I知 thankful for the teens that crowd the library on Wednesday afternoons shelving books, planning programs, and carrying home more stacks of books to read.

I知 thankful for the Library Board and the Friends of the Library that recognize the library as a community asset and work tirelessly to promote it. I知 thankful for the many volunteers who shelve the books, help with story times, and help develop the local history files.  Most of all, I知 thankful for my fine library staff that works together so well to provide interesting programs and courteous service to everyone.

:  Perhaps the fliers weren't snazzy enough or perhaps they didn't go out in a timely fashion or perhaps teens just had something better to do this past Halloween night.  Whatever the case, Teen Council痴 Wicked Waltz saw a less than spectacular turnout.  However, this is one group of teens that knows how to have a good time regardless of who turns up to share it with them.  We all had a great time and there were many positive aspects to our evening.  First of all, regardless of who was or was not there, Teen Council, under the very able and experienced leadership of Mr. Nick Kuhns, got this event up and running quickly and easily.

Decorations were hung, concessions were heated up, and everyone worked like a fine tuned machine.  This wasn't Nick's first rodeo, obviously.  Usually Twister is cut short due to the number of participants wanting to compete. This year, however, contestants got to contort to their hearts content. Face painters got to paint more than one face and we got to award extra prizes.

Thank you to the 20 teens that did come, we hope you had a great time.  See you next year!
