These qualities are scholarship, service, leadership, and character.” With the assistance of SHS Principal, Thomas O’Neal, senior members received the NHS seal to be placed on their diploma and gold honor cords to wear during graduation exercises on June 7. During the reception immediately following the officer installation, exceptional entertainment was provided by the incredible SHS Jazz Band, under the direction of  Scott Anderson

Habitat for Humanity Gift

What do you get when you add twenty-three 5th and 6th grade boys, nine buckets of paint, two dozen brushes, some shelving, and lots of pizza?  You get a Dillingham slumber party benefitting Habitat for Humanity. Dillingham teacher Sharla Mullens offered to host an all-boys slumber party at Dillingham school with a twist -  for a $25 donation, the boys could spend the night in her classroom, play games, watch movies, eat pizza - and paint shelving for a house to be constructed this spring and summer in Sherman. Their donations, less the cost of pizza, will be presented to Habitat for Humanity at the time of the dedication for House #17 in late June, 2008. The boys set up the boards on the school lawn and painted everything in sight, including all the shelving for the bedrooms, linen closet and pantry for the house.

The house is being constructed in partnership with Great Days of Service in Sherman. This is the second major donation to Habitat for Humanity from Dillingham students. Their gift of $1,000 was presented at the dedication of House #16 in March, 2008.

Strolling Through the Decades

Each year, Sherman High School freshmen GT students prepare an integrated, technology driven program to share with their peers. The program is called, "Strolling through the Decades" and that is exactly what they do. The students form groups and select a decade in the 20th century to research. They learn the many different aspects of the decade, i.e., history, science, literature, music, art, clothing, etc. Then they present their findings in a 30 minute technology driven, multi-media presentation in the SHS Little Theater. The students went all out this year, dressing in the styles of their particular decade, playing the pop music of the times and performing the dances to go along with it. Kayla Edwards, Jordan Smith, Kelsey Travis, Lydia Morrow, Taylor Walker, and Karah Brant chose the 1920’s for their decade presentation. Complete with flapper girls, beads, and the “Can, Can” dance these students researched and shared their findings which included everything from famous sports figures,(Jack Dempsey, Babe Ruth and Bill Tilden) and entertainment, (Charlie Chaplin, who was against talking films because he said, “Actions speak louder than words.”) to discoveries and inventions, (bobbie pins, Henry Ford’s Model T, penicillin).  Instructor, Jan Wilson said that she looks forward to this every year because the students continue to improve upon what was done the previous year.

Shown here is Taylor Walker explaining the fashion of the 1920’s, particularly the rising hemlines beginning in 1923 but falling back when the depression hit in 1929.

Shown here are students demonstrating dances of the Roaring Twenties.
