Step through the door at Finley-Oates Elementary School in Bonham and at first glance the young students seem to be patiently waiting on summer. But these youngsters have a very important assignment to complete before school lets out. A teacher needs their help and they won't let her down. Jennifer Miller, a second-grade teacher at Finley-Oates Elementary School in Bonham, was diagnosed with a craniopharyngioma (brain tumor) at the age of seventeen. She has had five brain surgeries and, most recently, radiation therapy. Although she is back at work, she was not able to work during the six-month treatment period. Normal bills and medical bills have accumulated beyond her ability to pay. So, the students have taken on a new homework assignment; they are bringing spare change from home and putting it into a jar to help Miss Miller. Besides the steady stream of students bringing change to the school office to contribute, another line of much smaller students catches the eye of visitors to Finley-Oates. These "die-cut" students are being sold for $1 and Miss Miller's friends and students want to see the figurines run along the wall all the way from the school office to this popular second-grade teacher's room. For every dollar raised, a die cut is made and the donor's name is put on it. The fundraiser has already raised $1,000 in only a week and it will continue until the end of school. The community is also being welcomed to a Luncheon For Hope to honor Miss Miller. This event is slated for Sunday, May 18 at First Presbyterian Fellowship Hall. Tickets may be purchased from any Finley-Oates staff member. You are invited to a Luncheon For Hope honoring Jennifer Miller 2nd Grade Teacher At Finley Oates
