Guest violist to perform at Tarleton March 24

STEPHENVILLE, TEXAS - Violist Meng-Chun Chi, will perform a recital with Dr. Leslie Spotz, pianist and Tarleton State University music faculty, on Mon., March 24. The performance will begin at 7:30 pm in the Clyde H. Wells Fine Arts Center Theater and admission is free.
The recital will include a performance by Illinois-based composer, Kathleen Ginther titled "Rhapsody." Also featured will be the Viola Sonata by composer, George Rochberg, and the Viola Sonata in F minor by Johannes Brahms.
The viola is a more mellow instrument with warmer tones and is slightly lower pitched than the violin, Spotz said. Meng-Chun Chi is a viola virtuoso and it will be a truly special event having her perform here.
Chi, originally from Taiwan, has been in the United States since 1988 pursuing music degrees from Oberlin Conservatory, the Cleveland Institute of Music and Rutgers University.
Currently, Chi is the assistant professor of viola at Southern Illinois University- Carbondale. She also serves as a faculty member at Vermont Youth Orchestra's Reveille music festival. As a chamber musician, she has collaborated with the Cavani String Quartet, Hungarian pianist Adam Fellegi and American violinist Misha Rosenker, among others.
She is also a member of the Illinois Symphony Orchestra in Springfield, Southern Illinois Symphony Orchestra and Paducah Symphony Orchestra in Paducah, Ky.
