Where were you on September 11, 2001? For 19 years, people have been asking that question and for many now living in North Texas, the answer is "New York City." That is one of the many reasons why the McKinney Chamber of Commerce Leadership McKinney Alumni Network hosts an annual event to honor the those who gave their lives and the other victims of the 9/11 terrorist attacks.

On September 19, 2020, from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m., Texas Coalition for Animal Protection (TCAP) will be at the Bonham Animal Control Shelter holding a rabies vaccination clinic with rabies shots costing $5, along with the regular vaccinations. Bonham Animal Control Shelter will also be holding a garage sale for the shelter from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. on that day.

Many people aren't aware that Texoma Council of Governments (TCOG) receives federal LIHEAP (Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program) funding to distribute to low-income families for energy expenses. Right now, because of the ongoing pandemic, an additional $94 million in funding is available to Texans through the CARES Act. People living in Collin, Cooke, Fannin, Denton, Hunt, Grayson & Rockwall counties can apply for assistance by downloading an application from TCOG’s website at www.tcog.com/energy/apply. Texoma Council of Governments will receive a federal grant totaling $400,000 to coordinate with rural communities to strategically leverage resources that assist in local economic recovery during the pandemic, U.S. Senator John Cornyn announced. This grant will be used to support local redevelopment and revitalization in the region and to assist communities in responding to the coronavirus pandemic.

The library board of directors is a governing board made up of 15 directors (currently 13) and is a working board that develops library policies, plans programs, raises funds, and administers those funds, excluding those supplied by the City of Bonham. The board spends countless hours working on and creating crafts, painting pumpkins, baking, donating their time in supporting the library. Each year the library board has two fundraisers: Pumpkin Patch Bazaar in October and Books n Blooms in April.

The sprawling Powder Creek Park complex is always a busy place, with children playing in the playground and walkers circling the park on a one-mile trail, but the park will be even more popular now that a ribbon-cutting ceremony has officially opened a splash pad to help children have fun outdoors during the summer heat.

Yaser Said, 63, had been a fugitive from justice since New Year's Day 2008, when he allegedly murdered his teenage daughters, Amina and Sarah. According to law enforcement, Yaser drove them to a location in Irving and shot them to death inside his taxicab, abandoning their bodies inside the vehicle. The following day, he was charged by the state with two counts of capital murder. In Dec. 2014, Yaser was placed on the FBI's "Ten Most Wanted" list, where he remained until his capture this week.

Bonham City Council unanimously approved an intent to establish an ad valorem tax rate of $0.6550 for the 2020/2021 fiscal year, discussed the installation of thousands of new water meters in the near future and received an overview of the coming fiscal year during a special called meeting Thursday, August 27, 2020.

Just add water! The grand opening of the splash pad in Bonham's Powder Creek Park is set for 9:00 a.m. Friday, August 28, 2020. The sprawling Powder Creek Park complex contains a hiking path, community playground, picnic tables, public restrooms, benches and the remnants of a historic dam used by the railroad during the steam-engine era.

After contemplating different tax rates, Fannin County Commissioners Court unanimously voted to adopt the current tax rate of $0.589% for the coming fiscal year.

According to the latest daily data release by Texas Department of State Health Services, Texas had 3,493 new cases of the novel coronavirus and 104 newly reported fatalities related to COVID-19 during the past 24 hours.

The Bonham ISD will begin closing Nolan Ashmore Drive during the day beginning August 20. Gates have been set in place and will be locked Monday-Friday from 6:30 a.m. until 6:00 p.m.

The Lake Fannin Volunteers are asking for help in replacing the roof on the historic lodge at Lake Fannin and would appreciate any help from the public in making this happen. The goal is to bring this beautiful location back to what is was for the citizens of Fannin County to enjoy.

The Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) Paris District is proposing to improve US Highway 82 (US 82) from the Fannin County Line to Loop 286 West of Paris, Texas in Lamar County, Texas. This notice advises the public that TxDOT will be conducting an online virtual public meeting on the proposed project. The virtual meeting will be held on Aug. 25, 2020 beginning at 6:00 p.m.

The City of McKinney is set to spray an area of the city to control mosquitoes after a mosquito pool tested positive for West Nile Virus. Spraying will start at 10 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 22, weather permitting. The spray area is generally a mile radius east of Coit Road, west of Memory Lane, south of Virginia Parkway, and north of Sexton Drive.
